Choice boards explained

What Is a Visual Choice Board?

A choice board is a visual support that helps a child see available options and communicate what they want, need, or want to do next.

01

Make choices easier to understand

Use a small number of clear options so the child can focus on what is available now.

02

Use familiar visuals

Photos of the child's actual cup, snack, toy, or calm space may be easier to recognize.

03

Support communication

A child can point, tap, look, gesture, speak, sign, or use AAC to communicate a choice.

04

Respect the response

Honor the choice whenever it is safe and possible so the visual has real meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are choice boards only for autistic children?

No. They can help anyone who benefits from visual information, including children with ADHD, anxiety, speech or language differences, developmental delays, or sensory needs.

Can I use my own photos?

Yes. Familiar photos can make options easier to recognize and connect the board to real life.

How many choices should I show?

Begin with two to four choices if many options feel overwhelming. Add more as the child becomes comfortable.

Do I need to print the board?

No. You can use it directly on a phone or tablet. Print it when you want a board available in a consistent location.

Is a choice board the same as AAC?

No. A choice board is a focused visual support, not a complete communication system. A child who uses AAC should continue to have access to it.
